My work on the TELA and Research Review gave me the opportunity to structure my writing for different audiences. In the TELA I opened with a a personal story to hook the reader’s attention and led into my topic of discussion. I chose to discuss the scientific information to an audience of women who had just received a diagnosis of primary peritoneal cancer. In my TELA, I used my personal experience to relate to the audience and explain the peritoneum and how cancer develops. I used instructor feedback on my TELA presentation and my written TELA to revise and improve my explanation; for example, after my TELA presentation I had to revise some of the language to provide an explanation the audience would understand. In an effort to appeal to the emotions of the lay audience I used my personal experience to relate to women and family members dealing with a diagnosis. Because the Research Review was directed towards a scientific audience who already had an understanding of the information, I had to structure my writing in a way that did not explain concepts they already knew. In my first draft of the review I included a longer introduction that went into detail on the methods and uses of Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy rather than just quickly introducing the topic and the research. After receiving instructor feedback I deleted over half of my introduction to eliminate descriptions that the audience did not need. The way I began the review differed from that of the TELA because I did not use a personal experience to hook the audience, instead I introduced the topic and led into the description of research. Also, in the review I focused on reporting different research studies, the results, and the ways in which research studies were similar and different. My research review included subtitles that broke up my topics of discussion and topic sentences to organize the points of analysis that I discussed in that particular section. Writing the research review helped me write the research proposal because both were directed toward scientific audiences and required similar language. While writing and revising the research review and proposal I had to work on utilizing active and passive voice to strengthen my sentences and focus attention to a specific part of the sentence.Working on the TELA, research review, and research proposal helped me realize the importance of first identifying an audience, then adapting the information in the correct manner so as to make the writing easy and interesting to read.
